Trader Joe's will open its second Hudson County location in Jersey City, the popular grocery chain confirmed to a business publication this week.
Trader Joe’s will open its second Hudson County location in Jersey City, the popular grocery chain confirmed to a business publication this week.
The California-based retailer confirmed its plans to open in the city but did not specify when or where the store will be located, according to the confirmation provided to NJBIZ.
Local reports indicate the store will occupy space at 50-55 Hudson Street, according to local media coverage. The site houses a mixed-use development owned by Tishman Speyer currently under construction along the Hudson River waterfront.
Rumors about Trader Joe’s potential arrival in Jersey City began circulating last fall when the Historic Downtown Special Improvement District suggested the possibility of a lease agreement. Local estimates project the store could open by 2027, according to previous reporting by the Jersey City Times.
The new location would mark Trader Joe’s second store in Hudson County. The chain’s Hoboken location opened in 2016 and serves as the county’s only current Trader Joe’s outpost.
Jersey City shoppers currently have several grocery options in the area, including a Whole Foods Market that opened two years ago approximately half a mile from the proposed Trader Joe’s site. Other nearby grocery stores include ShopRite and BJ’s Wholesale Club.
Founded in 1967, Trader Joe’s has built a reputation for its distinctive nautical-themed stores, friendly staff, and competitive pricing on seasonal and private-label products. The chain focuses particularly on gourmet, organic and specialty items, along with an extensive frozen food selection.
The company operates more than 630 stores across the United States. After launching nearly 30 new locations last year, Trader Joe’s plans to maintain its expansion pace with at least a dozen new stores nationwide in 2026.
New Jersey currently hosts 20 Trader Joe’s locations throughout the state. The chain has additional New Jersey openings planned for West Orange and Montvale in the near future.
The Jersey City location would add another major grocery retailer to the city’s growing waterfront area, which has seen significant residential and commercial development in recent years. The Hudson Street site’s proximity to the Hudson River waterfront positions it to serve both local residents and visitors to the area’s parks and recreational facilities.
Trader Joe’s distinctive approach to grocery retail includes limited product selections focused on the company’s private-label items, which often feature creative names and seasonal rotations. The chain’s business model emphasizes customer service and maintains a cult-like following among shoppers who appreciate its unique product offerings and affordable prices.
The confirmation comes as Jersey City continues to attract national retailers and restaurants to serve its growing population. The city’s downtown area and waterfront districts have experienced substantial growth in recent years, with new residential developments bringing thousands of additional residents to neighborhoods near the proposed store location.
Trader Joe’s has not provided additional details about the timeline for construction or opening of the Jersey City store. The company typically announces specific opening dates closer to completion of store preparations and staff hiring.
The new store will join Trader Joe’s existing New Jersey locations, which span from northern counties near New York City to southern regions near Philadelphia, serving the state’s diverse communities with the chain’s signature blend of specialty groceries and customer-focused service.
