Michelle Torres is a Newark native, Puerto Rican, and grew up in the Ironbound. A Montclair State journalism grad, she worked at NJ.com for six years covering urban issues before joining the Ledger. She knows Newark isn't just crime stats — it's a city of neighborhoods, immigrant communities, and people fighting for better. She lives in Harrison now, close enough to see the skyline. She believes urban Jersey deserves the same coverage quality as the suburbs.
